  • Complete a recognized marathon or ultramarathon on each of the seven continents (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America) — for Antarctica, the marathon must be run within the Antarctic interior (mainland Antarctica, within the Antarctic Circle); races held on nearby islands such as the Shetland Islands or King George Island don't count
  • Complete the North Pole Marathon
  • Be a member of The 7 Continents Marathon Club

What Is a Space Marathon?

A "space marathon" refers to an astronaut completing the full 26.2-mile marathon distance — as measured on the treadmill belt — aboard a crewed spacecraft in orbit, on a specially harnessed treadmill, in microgravity, timed to coincide with an actual marathon happening on Earth. The spacecraft itself travels much farther during that time — Peake pointed out afterward that the International Space Station covered nearly 100,000 km while he covered 42 km on the belt.

Only two astronauts have publicly documented completing a full marathon distance in space:

  • Sunita "Suni" Williams (2007) — The first person ever to run a marathon in space. On April 16, 2007, Williams ran the Boston Marathon on the ISS treadmill TVIS, tethered to the machine with a bungee harness so she wouldn't float away. Wearing Boston Red Sox socks and racing bib No. 14,000 taped to the treadmill, she started when the race began on the ground and finished in a time of 4 hours, 24 minutes, as recognized by Guinness World Records (some contemporaneous reports list 4:23:10 or 4:23:46) — all while orbiting Earth at roughly 17,500 mph. She holds the Guinness record for fastest marathon in orbit by a female.
  • Tim Peake (2016) — The first man, and first British astronaut, to run a marathon in space. Peake completed the London Marathon distance aboard the ISS on the COLBERT treadmill in 3 hours, 35 minutes, 21 seconds, adjudicated live by Guinness World Records via video link from the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne — the fastest marathon in orbit by a male.

The two times aren't directly comparable: Williams and Peake used different treadmills and harness systems with different loads, so, as The Guardian noted at the time, the times reflect different equipment as much as different pace. Guinness's category name is also specific — "fastest marathon in orbit," not "in space" — since orbit, not altitude, is what defines the feat.

Both runs required harness systems to press the runner against the belt. The station is in continuous free fall, so crew and treadmill accelerate together and there is no contact force underfoot — the harness supplies it artificially.
